Create Your Own: A Step-by-Step Guide to a DIY Table Top Book Rack

Love to read but running out of space for your books? Why not create a stylish and functional DIY table top book rack to display and organize your literary collection? This simple yet elegant project not only adds a personal touch to your home but also helps you make the most of your space. Let's dive into this step-by-step guide to craft your own table top book rack.

Materials Needed

  • Plywood (1/2" thick, 12" x 36" sheet)
  • Wood glue
  • Clamps
  • Saw (circular or jigsaw)
  • Sandpaper (120-grit)
  • Paint or stain (optional, for finishing)
  • Paintbrushes or foam rollers (for applying finish)
  • Pencil and ruler
  • Screws and drill (for attaching to table, optional)

Planning Your DIY Book Rack

Before you start cutting and gluing, plan the dimensions of your book rack. A standard size of 12" width x 36" length x 6" height works well for most tables. You can adjust these measurements to fit your specific table size or book collection. Once you've decided on the size, sketch out the design, including the number and size of shelves you'd like.

Calculating Shelf Sizes

For a simple three-shelf design, you'll need to cut four pieces of plywood: two for the sides and two for the shelves. If you want more shelves, adjust the number of pieces accordingly. Here's a simple calculation for a three-shelf rack:

How To Build A DIY Tabletop Book Rack - Anika's DIY Life

Piece Width Height Length
Side pieces (2) 12" (width) 6" (height) 36" (length)
Shelf pieces (2) 12" (width) 1" (thickness) 30" (length, to allow for 3" spacing between shelves)

Building the DIY Book Rack

Step 1: Cut the Pieces

Using your saw, carefully cut the plywood according to the measurements you calculated. Remember to wear safety glasses and follow proper saw operation procedures.

Step 2: Sand the Edges

Sand any rough edges or surfaces with 120-grit sandpaper to ensure a smooth finish and prevent splinters.

Step 3: Glue and Clamp the Sides

Apply wood glue along the edges of one of the side pieces. Align it with one of the shelf pieces, ensuring the width and length match. Clamp the pieces together and let the glue dry according to the package instructions. Repeat this process with the remaining side piece and shelf piece.

Step 4: Attach the Shelves to the Sides

Once the glue is dry, apply wood glue along the inside edges of the side pieces. Align the remaining shelf piece and clamp it in place. Allow the glue to dry completely.

Step 5: Finishing Touches (Optional)

If desired, apply paint or stain to your book rack using paintbrushes or foam rollers. Allow the finish to dry completely before placing books on the shelves.

Attaching the DIY Book Rack to Your Table (Optional)

For added stability, you can attach your DIY book rack to your table using screws. Pre-drill holes in the side pieces of the rack and the table to prevent cracking. Secure the rack to the table using screws, ensuring it's level and flush with the table's edge.

Now that you've created your own DIY table top book rack, you can proudly display your favorite books and enjoy a more organized reading space. Happy crafting!
