Crafting a Stylish Coffee Table: Simple Woodworking Plans
Embarking on a DIY woodworking project can be incredibly rewarding, and creating a simple yet elegant coffee table is an excellent starting point. This guide will walk you through the process, from selecting the right wood to assembling your finished piece. Let's dive in!
Gather Your Materials and Tools
Before you begin, ensure you have all the necessary materials and tools at hand. For this project, you'll need:
- Plywood (1" thick, 4' x 8' sheet)
- 2x4 lumber (8' long)
- Wood glue
- Screws (2-1/2" and 1-1/4")
- Stain or paint (optional)
- Safety gear (glasses, ear protection, gloves)
- Circular saw
- Drill and driver bits
- Jigsaw
- Orbital sander
- Tape measure
- Pencil
Design and Measure
First, decide on the size and style of your coffee table. For this plan, we'll create a simple rectangular table with the following dimensions:

| Width | Depth | Height |
|---|---|---|
| 18" | 48" | 16" |
Using a tape measure and pencil, mark these dimensions onto your plywood and 2x4 lumber.
Cut the Pieces
Carefully cut your pieces according to the measurements using a circular saw. You'll need:
- 4 legs (2x4s, 16" long)
- 2 long aprons (2x4s, 48" long)
- 2 short aprons (2x4s, 18" long)
- 1 tabletop (plywood, 18" x 48")
Assemble the Aprons
Using wood glue and 2-1/2" screws, attach the long and short aprons to form a rectangular frame. Ensure the corners are square by measuring diagonally from corner to corner.

Attach the Legs
Mark the center of each leg, 3" from the bottom. Attach the legs to the inside of the apron frame using wood glue and 2-1/2" screws. Ensure the legs are perpendicular to the aprons.
Sand and Finish
Sand any rough edges or surfaces using an orbital sander. Apply stain or paint as desired, following the manufacturer's instructions. Allow the finish to dry completely.
Attach the Tabletop
Center the apron frame on the tabletop and attach it using wood glue and 1-1/4" screws. Ensure the tabletop overhangs the aprons evenly on all sides.
Your simple yet stylish coffee table is now complete! Enjoy the satisfaction of having crafted a beautiful piece of furniture with your own hands. Happy woodworking!
