Transforming Nature's Leftovers: A DIY Tree Stump Table Base
When a tree meets its end, it's easy to see it as a loss. But with a little creativity and some elbow grease, you can turn that stump into a unique and functional piece of furniture - a tree stump table base. This DIY project not only gives new life to a fallen tree but also adds a rustic charm to your outdoor or indoor space. Let's dive into the process, step by step.
Choosing the Right Stump
Before you start, you need to select the right tree stump. The ideal stump is one that's relatively flat on top, has a good, sturdy base, and is free from rot or insects. The size of the stump will depend on the size of the table you want to create. Remember, the larger the stump, the heavier the table base will be.
Gathering Your Tools and Materials
- Chainsaw or handsaw
- Drill with various bit sizes
- Safety gear (gloves, glasses, ear protection)
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Wood glue
- Screws (2-1/2" and 1-1/4")
- Wood screws (1-1/4")
- Tabletop material (plywood, reclaimed wood, etc.)
- Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
- Wood sealant
Preparing the Stump
First, ensure the stump is stable and won't roll around while you're working. If necessary, secure it to the ground or a large, flat surface. Use your chainsaw or handsaw to level the top of the stump. Be careful not to make it too thin, as this could compromise the stability of your table.

Creating the Table Base
Now, it's time to create the base for your table. Using a drill with a large bit, create pilot holes for your screws. This will prevent the wood from splitting. Then, using 2-1/2" screws, attach four sturdy legs to the bottom of the stump. You can use reclaimed wood or purchase new lumber for this. Ensure the legs are evenly spaced and secure.
Optional: Adding Shelf Support
If you'd like to add a shelf to your table, measure and mark where you want it to go. Drill pilot holes and use 1-1/4" screws to attach support boards to the inside of the stump and legs. Then, attach the shelf using wood glue and 1-1/4" screws.
Attaching the Tabletop
Measure and cut your tabletop material to size. It should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the stump to allow for expansion and contraction with changes in humidity. Apply wood glue to the top of the stump and the bottom of the tabletop. Align them and use 1-1/4" screws to attach the tabletop to the stump.

Finishing Touches
Once the glue is dry, sand the entire table lightly with 120-grit sandpaper, followed by a finer sandpaper (220-grit) to smooth out any rough spots. Wipe off any dust, then apply a wood sealant to protect your table from the elements. Allow it to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Enjoy Your New Table!
Congratulations! You've turned a fallen tree into a beautiful, functional piece of furniture. Your new tree stump table base is ready to serve as a centerpiece for your patio, a workstation in your home office, or a unique addition to your living room. Enjoy the fruits of your labor!
