French New Wave Coffee Table Book

A coffee-table book on the Nouvelle Vague (or New Wave) filmmakers might be considered a contradiction in terms. Yet as big and well-designed as it is, with all those creamy photographs, it still manages to look like the smart, perverse product of that band of outsiders who in 1950s Paris decided to overturn the last generation. Jean Douchet's lavishly illustrated coffee-table book, French New Wave, is an eye-popping tribute to the movement that gained worldwide prominence in 1959 with the release of two groundbreaking motion pictures: Fran ois Truffaut's The 400 Blows and Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless.

At first glance, these films appear to have little in common. In-depth, well. The French New Wave of the 1950s and 1960s is one of the most important movements in the history of film. Its fresh energy and vision changed the cinematic landscape, and its style has had a seminal impact on pop culture.

The poster artists tasked with selling these Nouvelle Vague films to the masses-in France and internationally-helped to create this style, and in so doing found. A new book on the subject, however, turns its attention to the posters of the era, which brings us back to that Bardot image (below).
