The story of the BMW 700 is fascinating, beginning with its predecessor, the BMW 600, and culminating in a vehicle that would help secure BMW's future. BMW, in danger of a forced merger with arch-rival Mercedes-Benz, was seen as having a bright future based on the 700 and another Michelotti design, the soon-to-appear Neue Klasse sedans. Dealer and investor Herbert Quandt saw the potential, and upped his stake in BMW to 50%, keeping BMW an independent company.

The success of those cars put BMW on firm financial footing, which allowed the company to expand its product lineup to include a small coupe, a full-size sedan, and a larger but still sporty coupe. In its design the BMW 700 followed a trapezoid line with the roof structure and the basic body of the car opposed to one another to form two counter-flowing bodies.

This design concept came from the USA as a streamlined rendition of the former pontoon structure, with further refinement by Italian car designers. BMW 700 1959 - 1965 In 1959, BMW introduced the 700. A small, rear engined economy car, the 700 was created in order to boost sales at a time when the company was struggling financially.

As the first BMW car built with a monocoque structure, the car was not only important due to its sales success, but also its technological advancements. The 700 was powered by an elarged 697cc flat twin engine. By enhancing those values and making them the primary design guide, the new BMW team produced the Neue Klasse cars, from which the 3, 5, 6 and 7 series sprang in the 1970's and all other BMWs have followed.

The 700 had considerable success in motor racing and was exported to many countries, including England, Canada, and Malaya, but not.
