A persistent red handbrake light on your BMW is more than a warning—it’s a signal demanding attention. This light typically indicates a problem with the parking brake system, a fault in the brake light circuit, or an issue with the ABS module. Ignoring it can lead to further electrical damage or safety risks during driving. If the red light remains on after releasing the handbrake, it may stem from a mechanical binding, wiring fault, or sensor malfunction. Start by inspecting the handbrake lever for full release, checking cable tension, and verifying the brake light switch functionality. If basic checks don’t resolve the issue, consult a certified BMW technician for diagnostic testing. Prompt attention ensures your safety and prevents costly repairs down the line.

When the BMW red handbrake light stays on, immediate diagnosis is key. Begin by manually releasing the handbrake fully and waiting 30 seconds—sometimes minor binding triggers the light. Next, examine the brake light switch near the parking brake lever for dirt or damage. A faulty switch can send incorrect signals to the dashboard. If the light persists, use an OBD2 scanner to check for ABS or brake system error codes. Electrical issues like corroded wiring or a failing relay are common culprits. Professional inspection remains recommended for accurate fault isolation and repair.

OP go through the CBS menu system and see what the car says about remaining pad life. Are you getting a red-car-on-lift symbol when you start the car? If so, then one of the axles (or both) need new brakes. Appreciate 0 Quote 09-02-2014, 10.
The car on the lift symbol is a service called Vehicle Check. The car wants you to get it inspected. Have someone do a nice lookover of the car next time you're getting your oil serviced.
The handbrake light and the (!) light are due to you needing brake pads ASAP. Get those done, and if your rotors are junk (They likely are), you absolutely need to get those replaced too.
