Shower Niche Uneven

My contractor is a really nice and good guy with a good eye for detail. His people worked on this shower niche and you can see on the left that the hex tiles are off a bit. You can also see the subway tile above and below are slightly different size.

Is this normal? I asked him about it and he said it's normal to be off by 1/8 - 2/8. Take out all the niche tile. Replace with a premade niche that doesn't require tile on top.
