Wiring a 3-Way Switch: Two Comprehensive Methods
Installing a 3-way switch allows you to control a single light fixture from two different locations. This is particularly useful in hallways, staircases, or large rooms. Here, we'll guide you through two popular methods to wire a 3-way switch, ensuring your home is both functional and safe.
Understanding the Components
Before we dive into the wiring methods, let's familiarize ourselves with the components involved:
- 3-Way Switches (2): These are special switches that allow you to control a light from two locations.
- 14/3 Non-Metallic (NM) Sheath Cable (2): This cable contains three conductors (hot, neutral, and ground) and is used to connect the switches and the light fixture.
- 14/2 NM Sheath Cable (1): This cable contains two conductors (hot and neutral) and is used to connect the light fixture to the power source.
- Light Fixture (1): The light you want to control with the 3-way switches.
Method 1: Using a Power Source Switch Loop
In this method, one of the 3-way switches is connected directly to the power source, while the other controls the light fixture.

- Run the 14/3 cables from the power source to the first switch box, and from the first switch box to the second switch box. Also, run a 14/2 cable from the second switch box to the light fixture.
