Understanding 3-Way Switch Wiring with Power at Light
When it comes to wiring a 3-way switch, especially with power at the light, things can get a bit tricky. But don't worry, we're here to simplify the process for you. In this guide, we'll walk you through the steps to wire a 3-way switch with power at the light, ensuring safety and functionality.
Understanding the Components
Before we dive into the wiring process, let's first understand the components involved:
- 3-Way Switch (2 of them): These are special switches that allow you to control a light from two different locations.
- 14/3 Non-Metallic (NM) Sheath Cable: This cable contains three conductors (two hot and one neutral) and is used to connect the switches and the light.
- 14/2 NM Sheath Cable: This cable contains two conductors (one hot and one neutral) and is used to connect the light to the power source.
- 12/3 or 14/3 Romex Cable: This cable is used to supply power to the circuit.
- Light Fixture: The light you want to control with the switches.
Wiring the 3-Way Switch with Power at Light
Now that we understand the components, let's proceed with the wiring. For this example, let's assume you're wiring the switch on the right (Switch B) with power at the light (Light Fixture).

Step 1: Wire the Power Source to Switch A
Start by running the 12/3 or 14/3 Romex cable from your power source to Switch A. Connect the black (hot) wire to the common terminal of Switch A, and the white (neutral) wire to the neutral terminal. The ground wire should be connected to the ground terminal.
Step 2: Connect Switch A to Switch B
Now, run the 14/3 NM cable from Switch A to Switch B. Connect the black wire from this cable to the traveler terminal on Switch A, and the red wire to the other traveler terminal. The white wire should be connected to the neutral terminal on Switch A.
Step 3: Wire Switch B
At Switch B, connect the black wire from the 14/3 NM cable to the common terminal. The red and white wires should be connected to the traveler terminals.

Step 4: Wire the Light Fixture
Run the 14/2 NM cable from Switch B to the Light Fixture. Connect the black wire to the black (hot) wire of the 14/3 NM cable at Switch B. The white wire should be connected to the neutral terminal at Switch B, and the ground wire should be connected to the ground terminal.
Testing the Circuit
Once you've completed the wiring, it's time to test the circuit. Turn off the power at the main panel and use a non-contact voltage tester to ensure the wires are dead. Then, turn the power back on and test the switches to ensure they're working correctly.
Safety First
Always remember to turn off the power at the main panel before working on any electrical circuit. Use a voltage tester to ensure the wires are dead before you start working. If you're unsure about any part of the process, don't hesitate to consult a licensed electrician.
