- 12/3 or 14/3 cable (for 15-amp circuits) or 12/2 or 14/2 cable (for 20-amp circuits) for the ground wire
- Wire stripper

Wiring the Two-Way Switch: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Turn Off Power and Test Wires
Before starting any electrical work, ensure the power is turned off at the circuit breaker. Use a voltage tester to confirm that the wires are indeed dead. This step is crucial to prevent electrical shocks and fires.

Step 2: Run the Wires
Run the 14/3 cable from the power source (usually the electrical panel or a nearby junction box) to the first switch box. Then, run another 14/3 cable from the first switch box to the second switch box. Finally, run a 14/2 cable from the second switch box to the light fixture. Make sure to leave enough cable slack in each box for wiring connections.
Step 3: Wire the First Switch Box
Strip about 3/4 inch of insulation from each wire in the 14/3 cable and the 14/2 cable. Twist the ground wires (green or bare copper) together and connect them to the green or bare copper terminal on the first switch using a wire nut. Connect the black (hot) wire from the 14/3 cable to one of the brass terminals on the switch. Connect the white (neutral) wire from the 14/3 cable to the other brass terminal on the switch. The red wire in the 14/3 cable will be connected later at the second switch box.

Strip the wires in the 14/3 cable and the 14/2 cable as before. Connect the ground wires together and to the green or bare copper terminal on the second switch. Step 5: Wire the Light Fixture
Strip the wires in the 14/2 cable and connect the black wire to the black (hot) wire on the light fixture. Connect the white wire to the white (neutral) wire on the light fixture. Connect the ground wire to the green or bare copper wire on the light fixture.
Step 6: Test the Circuit
Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker and test the switches and light fixture to ensure they work correctly. Use a voltage tester to confirm that the wires are still dead when the switches are in the off position.
