Connecting a 3-Way Switch: A Comprehensive Guide
Connecting a 3-way switch can seem daunting, but with the right steps and understanding of electrical wiring, it's a task you can accomplish safely and effectively. This guide will walk you through the process, ensuring your lights are controlled from two different locations.
Understanding 3-Way Switches
Before we dive into the wiring process, let's understand what a 3-way switch is and how it works. A 3-way switch allows you to control a light from two different locations. It consists of two switches and a special type of wire called a travelers' wire. The switches are connected to the travelers' wire, which runs between them and the light fixture.
Tools and Materials Needed
- 2 - 3-way switches
- 14/3 non-metallic (NM) sheathed cable (for travelers' wire)
- 14/2 NM cable (for power supply and switched hot)
- Wire stripper
- Screwdriver
- Electrical tape
- Wire connectors (wire nuts)
Wiring a 3-Way Switch: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Install the First Switch Box
Start by installing the first switch box. Run the 14/2 power supply cable from the power source (usually the main panel) to the first switch box. Also, run the 14/3 travelers' wire from the first switch box to the second switch box and the light fixture.

Step 2: Wire the First Switch
Strip the wires in the first switch box. Connect the black (hot) wire from the power supply cable to the common terminal on the first 3-way switch. Connect the white (neutral) wire to the neutral wires in the travelers' cable. The ground wires should be connected together and to the green screw on the switch.
Step 3: Wire the Travelers' Wires
Connect the travelers' wires to the first switch. The two black wires from the travelers' cable will connect to the traveler terminals on the switch. It doesn't matter which wire goes where, as they are interchangeable.
Step 4: Install the Second Switch Box
Run the 14/2 switched hot cable from the first switch box to the second switch box. This cable will carry the power from the first switch to the second. Also, run the 14/3 travelers' wire from the first switch box to the second switch box and the light fixture.

Step 5: Wire the Second Switch
Strip the wires in the second switch box. Connect the black (hot) wire from the switched hot cable to the common terminal on the second 3-way switch. Connect the white (neutral) wire to the neutral wires in the travelers' cable. The ground wires should be connected together and to the green screw on the switch.
Step 6: Wire the Light Fixture
Strip the wires in the light fixture box. Connect the black (hot) wire from the travelers' cable to the black (hot) wire on the light fixture. Connect the white (neutral) wire from the travelers' cable to the white (neutral) wire on the light fixture. The ground wires should be connected together and to the ground wire on the light fixture.
Testing Your 3-Way Switch
Once all the wires are connected, turn off the power at the main panel and test your 3-way switch. Turn the power back on and flip the switches to ensure the light turns on and off from both locations.
Safety First
Always remember to turn off the power at the main panel before working on electrical wiring. Use a non-contact voltage tester to ensure the wires are dead before touching them. If you're unsure about any part of the process, don't hesitate to consult a licensed electrician.
