Mastering the 3-Way Switch: A Comprehensive Guide

Installing a 3-Way Switch: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Turn Off Power and Test Wires
Before you start, ensure the power to the circuit is turned off at the main panel. Use a voltage tester to confirm that the wires are not live.
Step 2: Run the Wires
Run the 14/3 NM cable from the power source to the first switch location. Then, run another 14/3 NM cable from the first switch to the second switch location. Finally, run a 14/2 NM cable from the second switch to the light fixture.
Step 3: Wire the First Switch
Strip about 8 inches of the outer jacket from the 14/3 cable at the first switch location. Strip about 1 inch of the insulation from the individual wires. Connect the black (hot) wire to the common terminal of the first switch. Connect the two white (neutral) wires together using a wire nut and electrical tape. Cap off the red (traveler) wire.

Step 4: Wire the Second Switch
At the second switch location, connect the black (hot) wire from the 14/2 cable to one of the traveler terminals on the second switch. Connect the red (traveler) wire from the 14/3 cable to the other traveler terminal. Connect the white (neutral) wire from the 14/2 cable to the white (neutral) wire from the 14/3 cable using a wire nut and electrical tape. Cap off the black (hot) wire from the 14/3 cable.
Step 5: Wire the Light Fixture
At the light fixture, connect the black (hot) wire to the black (hot) wire from the 14/2 cable. Connect the white (neutral) wire to the white (neutral) wire from the 14/2 cable. Cap off the ground wire.
Step 6: Test the Circuit
Turn the power back on at the main panel and test the switches. The light should turn on and off from both switch locations.
