Embrace your natural texture and achieve stunning, beachy waves with our comprehensive guide on how to get perfect wavy hair. This step-by-step tutorial is designed to help you enhance your natural waves or create loose, effortless curls, all while keeping your hair healthy and shiny. Let's dive in!
Understanding Your Hair Type
Before we begin, it's crucial to understand your hair type and texture. Wavy hair can range from loose, S-shaped waves to tight, curly coils. Knowing your hair type will help you choose the right techniques and products for your unique texture. For this tutorial, we'll focus on loose to medium wavy hair, but many of these tips can be adapted for tighter textures as well.
Prep Your Hair: The Night Before
For the best results, start with clean, damp hair. We recommend washing your hair the night before to give it time to air dry and reduce heat damage. Use a sulfate-free, moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to keep your hair hydrated and healthy. After washing, gently squeeze excess water from your hair and apply a leave-in conditioner or wave cream to enhance your natural texture.
Sectioning Your Hair
Once your hair is damp, it's time to section it for easier styling. Start by parting your hair down the middle, from your forehead to the nape of your neck. Then, create a second part from ear to ear, across the top of your head. You should now have four equal sections of hair.

- Section 1: The top section, from your forehead to the crown of your head.
- Section 2: The bottom section, from the nape of your neck to the crown of your head.
- Section 3: The left side section, from your left ear to the middle part.
- Section 4: The right side section, from your right ear to the middle part.
Creating Your Waves: The Scrunching Technique
Now that your hair is sectioned, it's time to create your waves using the scrunching technique. This method helps enhance your natural texture and prevents your hair from looking too uniform or crunchy. Here's how to do it:
- Take a small section of hair, about 1-2 inches wide, from the bottom of Section 2.
- Gently scrunch the section of hair towards your scalp using your fingertips, starting from the ends and working your way up.
- Apply a small amount of wave cream or mousse to the section as you scrunch, focusing the product on the mid-lengths and ends.
- Repeat this process with the remaining sections of hair, working your way up from the nape of your neck to the crown of your head.
Drying Your Hair
After scrunching your entire head of hair, it's time to let it dry. For the best results, we recommend air drying your hair to minimize heat damage. However, if you're short on time, you can use a diffuser attachment on your blow dryer to speed up the process. Here's how to use a diffuser:
- Set your blow dryer to the lowest heat setting and use your fingers to gently lift your hair at the roots.
- Place the diffuser over the lifted sections and cup your hand around it to create a barrier, trapping the heat and encouraging your waves to form.
- Gently move the diffuser around your head, focusing on the roots and mid-lengths of your hair.
- Once your hair is about 80% dry, flip your head upside down and scrunch your hair again to enhance your waves and add volume.
Finishing Touches
Once your hair is completely dry, it's time to add the finishing touches. Use your fingers to gently separate any crunchy or stuck-together sections, and fluff your hair at the roots to add volume. If your hair is looking a bit too perfect, you can use your fingertips to gently tousle your waves for a more natural, undone look.

To maintain your perfect wavy hair, we recommend washing your hair every 2-3 days to keep it looking fresh and bouncy. In between washes, you can use a dry shampoo or texturizing spray to absorb excess oil and add volume to your roots. With a little practice and the right techniques, you'll be rocking stunning, beachy waves in no time!
