Crafting a Stylish Small Lined Tote Bag: A Step-by-Step Guide
Embark on a creative journey to make your own small lined tote bag, perfect for everyday use. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the process, from gathering materials to the final stitch, ensuring a functional and stylish result. Let's dive in!
Gather Your Materials
Before you start, ensure you have all the necessary materials. Here's a list to help you prepare:
- Fabric for the outer bag (1/2 yard)
- Lining fabric (1/2 yard)
- Webbing or ribbon for handles (2 pieces, 36" each)
- Interfacing (optional, for added stiffness)
- Thread that matches your fabric
- Scissors or rotary cutter and mat
- Sewing machine with a universal needle
- Straight pins
- Tape measure
- Iron and ironing board
Measure and Cut Your Fabric
First, decide on the size of your tote bag. For a small bag, consider a width of 12" and a height of 14". Add 1" for the seam allowance on each side. Cut your outer and lining fabrics according to these measurements.

Creating the Base
To create the base of your bag, cut two rectangles from each fabric, 12" x 6" (width x height). These will be the bottom pieces of your bag.
Sew the Outer Bag
Begin by sewing the outer bag. Place the outer fabric right sides together, and sew along the 12" sides, leaving the bottom open. Repeat this process with the lining fabric.
Adding the Handles
Fold each piece of webbing or ribbon in half, and place them on the outer bag's top edges, with the raw edges aligned. Sew along the top edge, securing the handles in place. Repeat this process on the lining bag.

Assembling the Bag
With the outer and lining bags still right sides together, sew around the top edge, leaving the bottom open. This will create a single tube. Turn the tube right side out, so the outer bag is on the outside, and the lining is on the inside.
Creating the Lining
To create the lined effect, push the lining bag inside the outer bag, so the right sides are facing each other. Sew around the bottom edge, creating a closed bottom for your bag.
Finishing Touches
Press the seams with an iron to ensure a crisp finish. If you've used interfacing, fuse it to the outer bag's base for added structure. Your stylish small lined tote bag is now complete and ready for everyday use!

Happy sewing, and enjoy your handmade creation!
