Crafting a Stylish Small Pouch Bag: A Step-by-Step Guide
Embarking on a DIY project to create a small pouch bag is an exciting venture that combines creativity and functionality. Whether you're looking for a handy accessory to organize your essentials or a thoughtful gift, this comprehensive guide will walk you through the process of making a stylish and durable pouch bag. Let's dive into the world of sewing and crafting!
Gather Your Materials
Before you begin, ensure you have all the necessary materials and tools at hand. Here's a list to get you started:
- Fabric (outer and lining) - 1/4 yard each
- Interfacing - 1/4 yard
- Thread - matching your fabric
- Scissors or rotary cutter and mat
- Sewing machine
- Straight pins or fabric clips
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Pencil
- Optional: zipper (if you'd like a closure) - 7" or 9"
Design and Measure
First, decide on the size and shape of your pouch bag. For a small bag, aim for dimensions around 7" x 5". Sketch your design on paper, including any desired features like a zipper closure or a flat bottom. Once you're happy with your design, measure and mark the following points on your fabric:

- Top and bottom of the bag
- Sides of the bag
- If using a zipper, mark the center of the top edge for placement
Cut Your Fabric
Using your measurements, cut out the following pieces from your outer fabric, lining fabric, and interfacing:
- 2 outer pieces
- 2 lining pieces
- 2 interfacing pieces (slightly smaller than the outer pieces)
Prepare the Interfacing
Iron the interfacing onto the wrong side of one of the outer pieces and one of the lining pieces. This will give your pouch bag structure and stability. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for ironing on interfacing.
Sew the Outer Bag
Now it's time to start sewing! Place the two outer pieces right sides together, aligning the edges. If you're using a zipper, insert it now by sewing one side of the zipper to the top edge of the bag, aligning the zipper with the center mark you made earlier. Sew along the zipper tape, leaving the teeth unsewn.

Sew around the bag, leaving the bottom open. If you'd like a flat bottom, clip the corners and curve the seam allowance as you go. Press the seam allowance open with an iron.
Sew the Lining
Repeat the same process with the lining pieces. Sew the sides and bottom together, leaving the top open. If you've added a zipper, remember to leave the zipper teeth unsewn on the lining as well.
Attach the Lining to the Outer Bag
Place the outer bag and lining right sides together, matching the seams. Sew around the top edge, leaving a small opening for turning. Clip the corners and curve the seam allowance as you go. Turn the bag right side out through the opening, and press.

If you've used a zipper, topstitch along the zipper to secure it in place. For a finished look, you can also topstitch around the entire bag.
Optional: Add a Loop for a Handle
If you'd like to add a handle to your pouch bag, cut a strip of fabric 2" x 12". Fold it in half lengthwise, right sides together, and sew along the long edge. Turn it right side out and press. Insert the loop into the top of the bag, positioning it where you'd like the handle to be. Topstitch in place.
Your stylish small pouch bag is now complete! Fill it with your essentials and enjoy your handmade creation. Happy crafting!
