Design and Measure

First, decide on the style and size of your sofa. Consider the space it will occupy and your personal preferences. Once you have a design in mind, measure the length, width, and height you want for your sofa. These measurements will guide your wood cuts.

Build the Frame

The frame is the foundation of your sofa. Cut your wood pieces according to your measurements. You'll need two long pieces for the arms, two shorter pieces for the back, and two more for the base. Assemble these pieces using wood glue and screws, ensuring they're square and level. Allow the glue to dry completely before proceeding.

Create the Seat and Back Supports

Cut plywood or MDF to fit the seat and back of your sofa. These will provide structure and support for your cushions. Attach them to the frame using screws. For added comfort, you can add a second layer of plywood or MDF to the seat support.

Add Legs and Reinforce

Sand the entire frame with 120-grit sandpaper, followed by 220-grit for a smooth finish. Wipe off any dust with a damp cloth. If desired, you can stain or paint the wood at this stage. Allow it to dry completely before upholstering.

Upholster the Sofa

This is where your sofa starts to look like a sofa! Begin by cutting foam to fit the seat and back supports. Wrap the foam in upholstery batting to create a smooth surface for your fabric. Cut your upholstery fabric to size, leaving enough excess for wrapping and stapling.

Attach the Fabric

Starting with the back of the sofa, wrap the fabric around the batting and foam, pulling it taut. Staple it in place, using a staple gun. Work your way around the sofa, pulling the fabric tight and stapling it in place. For the arms, you may need to cut and attach the fabric in two pieces to achieve a smooth look.

Add Cushions

Cut foam for your seat and back cushions. Wrap them in batting and fabric, following the same process as the sofa itself. Add any decorative piping or trim you desire. Finally, attach the cushions to the sofa using ties, buttons, or velcro.

Enjoy Your Homemade Sofa

Step back and admire your handiwork! With a little time, effort, and patience, you've created a beautiful, unique sofa that's perfect for your home. Don't forget to share your creation with others, inspiring them to craft their own furniture.
