The 2023 Austin marathon is the race that I had the most training for, meaning only 8 weeks of really poor programming and low mileage with the last two weeks being a taper that I probably. Fortunately, the Dallas Half Marathon seems pretty friendly for beginner racers the entire back half of the race is mostly downhill. I am regularly passing folks at this point in the race - likely a result of my selection into the wrong corral - which is a confidence booster, but makes it hard for me to find a buddy to try and keep up.
I hope the course support is strong throughout the whole race. As much as I love the Cowtown Marathon, it gets awfully lonely when the marathoners and half marathoners split at mile 12 and the course support dies outside of aid stations and the block party at Mile 20. Starting adding more mileage and found my long runs being a half marathon every Sunday.
Eventually I started increasing those and when I managed 18 I signed up for my marathon in December 2021. I've ran 20-some half marathons over the years, because I could put minimal training in, get to the end, and move on. But I had never put in a real training routine to finally run a full 26.2.
Since I had a history of running and a high aerobic base from a summer full of cycling, I started Hal Higdon's Novice 2 schedule. Full (26.2M), Half Marathon (13.1M), Half Marathon Walk (13.1M) & 50K Ultra Marathon (31M) Sunday's race course will begin and end in Downtown Dallas and will highlight the best areas of the city.
