According to the Book of Mormon, Jesus offered an atonement for the sins of the world because of His "bowels of mercy; being filled with compassion towards the children of men" (Mosiah 15:9). As for the good Samaritan, the "Greek word literally says that the Samaritan's bowels were moved with deep, inner sympathy. The Good Samaritan Jesus told many stories, or parables, to help people learn the truth.
One day a leader of the Jews asked Jesus what he must do to have eternal life. The Savior asked him what the scriptures said. The leader said that a man should love God and also love his neighbor.
