She is widely known for sharing her love for mushroom and lichen dyes through her in-person workshops and international public outreach platform, Mushroom and Lichen Dyers United. Alissa is committed to advancing the art, science, and craft of mushroom and lichen dyeing as means of forging bonds between individuals and the places they love. The Fungal Fiber Arts Workshops listed below are just a few of the very many mushroom dye workshops led by members of the IMDI in the USA during the last two decades.
These workshops are separate from the International Symposia which are sponsored world-wide by the IFFF. Instructors from the IMDI are invited by local mycological societies, textile arts groups, and community education programs. The workshop will begin with a day in the forest, where participants will learn to identify and forage for dye mushrooms with guidance from Julie.
Mushroom Dye Workshop | Kent Falls Brewing Co
The following two days will be spent in the studio, exploring various mushroom dye techniques, including making pigments, inks, and watercolors. Wildcraft Dyeing is devoted to providing information on how to forage, process and use natural dyes from plants, mushrooms and lichens. The workshop includes a mushroom dye kit.
It will include 4 different dye mushrooms, pre-mordanted fiber, supplies to make 'lakes' from your dye baths and an at home equipment list. You will get the most out of the workshop if you are prepared and follow along doing the steps with me while at home. Fresh dye mushrooms will be looked at if available.

Each participant will receive several handouts on mushroom dyeing and 15. Her book The Mushroom Color Atlas, recently published by Chronicle Books, is a comprehensive primer on the universe of colors lurking inside fungi. It is equal parts art book, field guide, and dye.
This "Mushrooms for Color" website is sponsored by the International Mushroom Dye Institute (IMDI), founded by Miriam C. Rice in 1985. Miriam believed that people throughout the world would benefit from exploring the full spectrum of color derived from mushrooms.

Combine your interests and learn how to use mushrooms to create beautiful, vibrant, and nontoxic dyes perfect for any natural fiber. This online Zoom workshop with Botanical Colors will take place on one Saturday, November 12, 2022. Participants receive a procedural handout, a customized guide to local dye fungi and a beautiful hand dyed scarf.
This workshop covers all aspects of getting started with mushroom and lichen dyes and leaves the student with the tools to carry on with their own exploration.
