I'm saying out that if you could breed a blue sheep and a yellow sheep to get a green one but couldn't combine blue dye and yellow dye to get green dye then it would be inconsistent. Does it matter? Probably not - I'm just pointing out what is probably Mojang's reasoning. Reply reply more repliesMore repliesMore repliesMore repliesMore replies.

The Minecraft wiki article on sheep, in the breeding section breeding says: If the parents have 'compatible' wool colors (meaning that the corresponding dye items could be combined into a third dye color), the resulting lamb will be a mix of their colors (e.g., blue sheep + white sheep = light blue lamb). Most players think baby sheep just copy their parents' colors but that's not the full story! There's a hidden rule for breeding sheep that can create colors you didn't expect. This Minecraft tutorial explains how to breed sheep with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

In the case of sheep, if the parents have "compatible" colors (meaning that their corresponding dye items could be combined into a third dye), the baby inherits a mix of the parents' colors. In the case of mooshrooms, breeding two of the same variant has a 1 ⁄ 1024 chance to spawn a mooshroom of the opposite variant. Just breed these two minecraft sheep and there will be a pink baby sheep.

However, if you breed for example a green and a red sheep, these colors don't match and the baby will have either one of the two colors. In this video I have made a tutorial on how to get all the sheep colours through breeding using as little amount of dye as possible. This can be helpful in Survival Minecraft as not all dyes are readily available in the early game.
