Frio River Bald Cypress
Bald Cypress trees are common sights in the landscape and frequently sought after. The Frio River originates from just that, the Frio River not quite 90 miles west of San Antonio, TX. Like its cousin, the Frio is found along river banks and often in the river itself.
Taxodium distichum, commonly called bald cypress, is a long-lived, pyramidal conifer (cone-bearing tree) which grows 50-70' tall (less frequently to 125'). Although it looks like a needled evergreen (same family as redwoods) in summer, it is deciduous ("bald" as the common name suggests). Growing Bald-cypress grows well in full sun, in acidic, moist soil, but it can adapt to most soils and conditions. Highly alkaline soil may cause the foliage to turn yellow (chlorotic), although a particular strain from the Frio River in west Texas performs brilliantly in very alkaline soil. Anybody here have any experience with taxodium distichum 'frio river'? I'm in kansas and we don't have the best ph soil for taxodium usually but someone was telling me about a frio river cultivar that can grow in pH 8 soils with no problem.

They prefer wet soil and are often fund along river banks. I saw this one on the banks of the Rio Frio, in Garner State Park this weekend.
