Harold Edgerton Still Life
Harold became interested in photography through his uncle, Ralph Edgerton, a studio photographer. Uncle Ralph taught Harold how to take, develop, and print pictures. Harold worked summers during high school at the Nebraska Power and Light Company.
Harold Eugene Edgerton (), also known as Papa Flash, was an American scientist and researcher, a professor of electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. [1] The extraordinary images by pioneering photographer Harold Edgerton capture moments and actions frozen in time.
Edgerton was awarded the U.S. National Medal of Science in 1973. His work was the subject of a retrospective at the International Center of Photography, and he was given ICP's Infinity Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1987.
Edgerton's influence is still felt today, as we still use his invention in contemporary flash cameras, although their size over time has somewhat changed. Edgertons tube remains the basic flash device used in still photography. The xenon flash could also emit repeated bursts of light at regular and very brief intervals and was thus an ideal stroboscope.
He taught and researched at the school until his retirement in 1968, but continued work at the school laboratories for much of the rest of his life. Edgerton died of a heart attack on at the MIT Faculty Club. He was survived by his wife, Esther May Garrett, daughter, Mary L.
Dixon, and son, Robert.
