Harvard Study Gun Control

The Harvard Injury Control Research Center (HICRC) works to reduce the societal burden of injury and violence through research, intervention, evaluation, outreach, and training. In addition to our degree programs, we offer highly targeted programs through our Advanced Learning Academy, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. Using data from a national random-digit-dial telephone survey conducted under the direction of the Harvard Injury Control Center, we examined the extent and nature of offensive gun use.

We found that firearms are used far more often to frighten and intimidate than they are used in self-defense. For decades, other injury-prevention experts and I have emphasized that gun violence in the United States is a major public-health problem as well as a public-safety problem, and that the country should use a public-health approach to help reduce the problem. These two claims have been fought by the gun lobby.
