John The Ranger Taliaferro

John Taliaferro "the Ranger" was the son of Robert Taliaferro and Katherine Debnam. He was born about 1656 in Rappahannock, Colony of Virginia and died in Essex, Virginia in 1720. Col John "The Ranger" Taliaferro, Sr., son of Robert Taliaferro and his wife Katherine Debnam, was born about 1656 in Gloucester or Old Rappahannock, Colony of Virginia.

He was known as the Ranger due to his explorations in the Shenandoah Valley with his step-father, Cadwallader Jones. He was a member of the House of Burgesses in 1699. After his service, John earned the moniker the Ranger which did help to distinguish him from his son, John of Snow Creek! Ten years earlier in the summer of 1682, he joined with Cadwallder Jones to range the great fork of the Rappahannock River.

During the ensuing summer of 1682, [Cadwallder] Jones ranged the great fork of the Rappahannock with John Taliaferro, of Snow Creek, son of the Robert "Talifer" from whose house on Rappahannock Lederer had set out ten years previously. He was a Colonel in the Virginia militia but first served as a Lieutenant in the Rangers, hence he is referred to as "The Ranger" to differentiate him from his son of the same name who was also a Colonel in the Virginia militia. Katherine (Debnam) Taliaferro and her second husband, Colonel Cadwallader Jones, evidently had only one child, a daughter, Frances Jones, who married Robert Slaughter (died 1726) of Essex County.
