Peaking at number 28 on the US Billboard 200, the album received mixed reviews which largely criticized its adult contemporary arrangements, production and auto-tune directions which were allegedly at the behest of co-producer Joe Thomas, who previously co-produced That's Why God Made the Radio. Some great songs on it! Altohugh, I can see why some people wouldn't like some of it. Any time Als voice comes in it steals the show. The production, however, is bland.
Vocal arrangements are great, though! I love that album. You dont even have to listen to the 72-year-old pop icons 11th studio recording to know what it sounds like all baroque melodies, layered harmonies and dimly lit nostalgia. For this reason, No Pier Pressure is an album stuck in a frustrating double-bind from the perspective of the listener.
On the one hand, Wilsons joint experiments with other artists do feel very much like giving into, yes, peer pressure, with his sound being pulled in all sorts of wrong directions. In other words, No Pier Pressure betrays him as an existential coward, and as a consequence its music suffers for lack of substance. Examples abound of his aversion to expressing anything other than a need to detach himself from everything.
