In the United States, laws regarding the minimum age to purchase and consume tobacco products have been made by states, territories, the District of Columbia and the federal government. Before 1992, states had the sole power to enforce their own minimum ages. The legal smoking age in Washington D.C.
is 21 years old. This means that individuals must be at least 21 years of age to purchase and possess tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco, within the District of Columbia. The DC Department of Health works to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke through the drafting and implementation of laws and regulations that restrict smoking in public places.
The DC Tobacco Free Coalition (DCTFC) is committed to making sure all DC residents who smoke have access to smoking cessation treatments so they can stay quit for good. More than 16 percent of adults in Washington, DC are smokers. In the District of Columbia, smoking is generally prohibited in elevators, in public selling area of retail stores (except a tobacco shop or store selling tobacco and smoking equipment), in government public assembly or hearing room, and in educational facilities.
An act to prohibit the sale of tobacco to minors under sixteen years of age in the District of Columbia, approved (26 Stat. 736; D.C. Official Code 7-1721.01 et seq.), is amended as follows:

Customers must be 21 years or older to purchase tobacco products, e-cigarettes and e-vapor products (See Restricted Products section). It is illegal to sell, give or furnish, or cause to be sold, given or furnished, tobacco products to or for anyone under 21.
