When Marines Try To Read
The Commandant's Reading List is a list of books Marines are recommended and often required to read. Use them to develop personal and professional skills. ...at some point in your career, you stop reading the damned thing and have it memorized.
That's what happens when you hear it read aloud at least once or twice a month for years. Poor Crayon eating bastards These levels coincide with specific ranks and Marines should attempt to read all titles within their level prior to proceeding to a higher level.
In addition to the reading list, Marines are highly encouraged to incorporate periodicals into their reading regimens. MUST READ AND DISCUSS AS TEACHERS AND SCHOLARS. 2.
TO CREATE A SENSE OF PERSONAL OWNERSHIP OF OUR READING PROGRAM BY EACH MARINE, I HAVE RENAMED IT THE "U. S. MARINE READING PROGRAM."
Back in 1989, as the Marine Corps University was being established, the original Commandants Reading Program was being created. The original Marine reading program was a combat curated roster of all-star volumes. The Commandant's Reading List is a list of books that are recommended and, at times, required for Marines to read.
The selection of books is meant to develop Marines both personally and professionally. Below we highlight 36 of the best books from all the Commandants Professional Reading Lists that were issued from 1989 until 2019 (you can find all the previous Marine Corps reading lists here), nearly all of which weve read ourselves and can personally recommend. I was curious if Marines still read these? My youngest brother, also a Marine, but who served 20 years after I did, had never heard of them.
They are definitely from a different era (post-WWII) and some of the stories probably haven't aged well, but I truly enjoyed them. In 1989, the reading list was codified, and since then, each Commandant has issued their Commandants Professional Reading List to improve Marines understanding of the military profession, the nature of warfare, and develop decision-making and critical-thinking skills.
