The sheep areas in Wyoming are physically challenging and have populations of native bighorns. Even though trophy bighorn sheep are a possibility in Wyoming, hunters should not expect to harvest a book ram. Each year the Wyoming Game and Fish Department registers harvested bighorn sheep at hunter check stations and surveys bighorn sheep hunters who did not harvest. This information is used to calculate the number of animals harvested, hunter success, and hunter effort. In 2014 the estimated statewide winter population of Bighorn Sheep was 6,450.
The large core herds in the northwest corner of the state account for over 85% of Wyomings statewide total, and represent some of the largest meta-populations of Bighorn Sheep throughout its range. After all, this is how these guys pack their Dalls sheep out of the Northwest Territories every year. They left behind a front shoulder and hindquarter but placed the head and hide on top of the meat so the grizzlies and wolves would get that first.
