Timing note: July 22, 2026 is today, not tomorrow. Teledyne is scheduled to release 2Q26 results before the NYSE open and host its earnings call at 11:00 a.m. ET.
Teledyne enters 2Q26 with solid operational momentum, a favorable defense-imaging backdrop, improving leverage, and a guidance range that calls for another double-digit increase in adjusted EPS. The central question is less whether TDY can deliver the quarter—management’s $5.70–$5.80 adjusted-EPS outlook gives investors a relatively firm benchmark—and more whether it can sustain organic growth and margin expansion while navigating tariffs, supply-chain exposure, and uneven industrial demand.
The stock closed at $647.52 on July 21, roughly flat since the April 22 first-quarter release. At that price, it trades near 27x the midpoint of management’s FY26 adjusted-EPS outlook ($24.00), implying that a merely in-line quarter may not be enough; investors are likely to focus on the quality of growth, the trajectory of orders, and whether full-year guidance moves higher again.
| Metric | 1Q26 actual | 2Q26 management outlook | 2Q25 actual |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $1.56bn | No revenue guidance provided | $1.51bn |
| GAAP EPS | $4.85 | $4.75–$4.90 | $4.43 |
| Adjusted EPS | $5.80 | $5.70–$5.80 | $5.20 |
| GAAP operating margin | 18.9% | — | 18.4% |
| Adjusted operating margin | 22.6% | — | 22.2% |
| Free cash flow | $204m | — | $196m |
At the $5.75 midpoint of the 2Q26 adjusted-EPS range, Teledyne is guiding to roughly 11% year-over-year EPS growth versus $5.20 in 2Q25. The GAAP midpoint of $4.83 similarly implies about 9% growth year over year.
Importantly, management raised its FY26 adjusted EPS outlook after 1Q—from $23.45–$23.85 to $23.85–$24.15. The new $24.00 midpoint is a $0.35 increase from the prior midpoint. Maintaining that raised guide after the quarter would be constructive; another increase would reinforce that first-quarter strength was not simply a timing benefit.
Digital Imaging is Teledyne’s largest business, contributing roughly 52% of 1Q revenue. In 1Q, segment sales rose 7.9% and operating income rose 15.9%, helped by infrared imaging detectors and systems, surveillance products, and unmanned-air systems serving defense customers.
The key read-through for 2Q:
Digital Imaging generated a 17.3% GAAP operating margin in 1Q, up 110 basis points year over year despite elevated R&D. Sustaining or improving this margin would be a high-quality outcome.
Teledyne is benefiting from higher global defense spending. In 1Q, Aerospace & Defense Electronics revenue grew 14.4%, while segment operating income increased 28.2%. However, acquisitions supplied $20.3m of the segment’s $35.0m sales increase, so underlying demand—not just acquired revenue—will matter.
Investors should look for management commentary on:
The defense backdrop is favorable, but it also introduces execution and supply-chain considerations. Recent policy attention on defense-sector supply chains raises the importance of management’s sourcing and component-availability commentary.
Instrumentation sales grew 5.3% in 1Q, supported by marine instrumentation and gas-detection demand. But segment operating income fell 4.6%, and margin contracted to 24.5% from 27.0%, primarily due to unfavorable product mix.
That makes Instrumentation arguably the most important margin watch item for 2Q. A rebound would support the thesis that the 1Q pressure was temporary mix noise. Continued deterioration would raise questions about whether strong revenue is converting to earnings at the expected rate.
Specific items to watch:
TDY has a history of managing guidance carefully. In 2Q25, management noted that results likely benefited from some accelerated demand amid trade-policy uncertainty and expressed caution regarding the following quarter. This time, the market will be looking for a clearer read on whether tariffs or customer purchasing behavior affected 2Q demand.
Bullish outcome: - Adjusted EPS at or above the high end of $5.70–$5.80; - Broad organic growth across Digital Imaging, defense electronics, and Instrumentation; - Stable-to-improving adjusted operating margin; - FY26 adjusted EPS guidance raised above the current $23.85–$24.15 range.
More muted outcome: - EPS within the range, but largely acquisition-led; - Continued Instrumentation margin pressure; - Cautious commentary on tariffs, rare-earth availability, government award timing, or commercial end markets; - No change to full-year guidance despite a quarterly beat.
Teledyne’s balance-sheet trajectory is a meaningful positive. In 1Q, the company generated $234m of operating cash flow and $204m of free cash flow. It finished the quarter with net debt of $1.95bn, then repaid a $450m debt maturity after quarter-end using cash on hand. Its consolidated leverage ratio stood at 1.3x.
This gives management flexibility across four uses of capital:
TDY had $1.6bn remaining on its repurchase authorization at the end of 1Q, though it did not repurchase shares in that quarter. Investors should listen for whether the recent share-price range has made buybacks more attractive relative to acquisitions.
Working capital also bears watching: 1Q inventory rose to $1.12bn from $1.04bn at year-end, contributing to lower operating cash flow versus the prior year. A normalization of inventory investment would support stronger second-half cash conversion.
Teledyne’s 2Q26 setup is constructive: management is guiding for about 11% adjusted-EPS growth, defense and imaging demand remain supportive, 1Q margins were strong, and leverage has moved down materially. The most important confirmation points are organic growth, Instrumentation-margin recovery, order trends, and the direction of FY26 guidance.
A result near the high end of guidance accompanied by a full-year raise would strengthen the case that TDY’s diversified sensing and defense portfolio is producing durable earnings growth. Conversely, an in-line result paired with tariff-related caution, weaker order commentary, or continued mix-driven margin pressure could limit upside given the stock’s approximately 27x forward adjusted-EPS valuation.
