Executive summary

Tesla enters the report with an unusually favorable operating setup: Q2 vehicle deliveries beat the pre-report sell-side consensus by roughly 18%, while energy-storage deployments rebounded sharply from Q1. That should produce strong sequential revenue and operating-income growth.

The harder questions are:

  1. How profitable were the additional vehicle deliveries?
  2. How much cash is Tesla burning as capital spending accelerates?
  3. Is Robotaxi progressing from small pilots toward a scalable commercial business?
  4. Are Cybercab, Semi and Optimus production schedules holding?

Tesla’s approximately $1.34 trillion market capitalization and roughly 182x company-compiled 2026 non-GAAP EPS consensus leave little room for an ordinary automotive result. The operating setup is strong—but not uniformly so

Vehicle deliveries were far above expectations

Tesla delivered 480,126 vehicles, compared with the company-compiled pre-quarter consensus of 406,024. Deliveries increased approximately 34% sequentially and 25% year over year. Model 3/Y represented 467,762 units, or more than 97% of deliveries. (ir.tesla.com)

Tesla also delivered roughly 28,400 more vehicles than it produced during Q2. That is directionally positive for working capital and suggests the company drew down part of the inventory accumulated during Q1, when production exceeded deliveries by about 50,000 units.

The caveat is mix. “Other Models” deliveries fell from 16,130 in Q1 to 12,364 in Q2, while the quarter’s growth came overwhelmingly from Model 3/Y. A simple automotive-revenue-per-delivery calculation using consensus estimates falls from about $45,300 in Q1 to $41,800 in Q2. That ratio is imperfect because automotive revenue includes leasing and regulatory credits, but it suggests that mix, pricing or incentives could offset some of the volume benefit.

Energy recovered, but slightly missed deployment expectations

Tesla deployed 13.5 GWh of energy storage, up approximately 53% sequentially and 41% year over year. That was modestly below the pre-quarter consensus of 13.8 GWh, but it should still drive a substantial rebound from Q1’s weak energy revenue. (ir.tesla.com)

Energy margins deserve close attention. Q1’s exceptionally strong energy profitability included more than $250 million of favorable one-time tariff-related items, and management cautioned that normalized margins could compress because of competition and the cost of China-sourced battery cells. A strong revenue quarter with meaningfully lower energy gross margin would therefore not be surprising.


The five issues that should determine the reaction

1. Automotive gross margin: the most important reported number

Q1 automotive gross margin excluding regulatory credits reached 19.2%, but the result benefited from approximately $230 million of warranty true-ups plus tariff relief. Tesla’s total Q1 gross margin was 21.1%; consensus expects that to fall to 19.5% in Q2 despite much higher volume. (ir.tesla.com)

Positive interpretation: Ex-credit auto margin remains around 18%–19% without significant one-time benefits.

Negative interpretation: Deliveries beat dramatically, but price cuts, financing incentives and lower-end Model 3/Y mix push normalized auto margin back toward the mid-teens.


2. Free cash flow and the cost of the AI strategy

At the Q1 call, management raised expected 2026 capital expenditures to more than $25 billion, driven by AI compute, factories, semiconductor initiatives, Robotaxi infrastructure and new products. 5. Product ramps: milestones matter more than installed capacity

Tesla’s Q1 materials said Cybercab and Semi were scheduled for volume production during 2026, while Optimus production equipment was being installed. The central investment question, however, has moved beyond Q2 earnings:
