Amphenol (NYSE: APH) — Q2 2026 Earnings Preview

Investment framing

Amphenol enters Q2 with unusually strong operational momentum, but also a high bar. The central issue is no longer whether the company is growing: it is whether the AI/data-center interconnect cycle, newly acquired CommScope assets, and broad industrial/defense strength can support another material upside versus management’s already aggressive outlook—while sustaining industry-leading margins and beginning to demonstrate deleveraging capacity.

At the midpoint, guidance implies approximately 44% year-over-year revenue growth and 42% adjusted EPS growth, or roughly $5.66B of Q2 2025 revenue and $0.81 of prior-year adjusted EPS. The report needs to be evaluated less on the headline year-over-year growth—helped significantly by acquisitions—and more on organic growth, IT datacom demand, bookings, and the Q3 outlook.

What matters most

1. AI-driven IT datacom is the key swing factor

IT datacom represented 41% of Q1 sales, making it by far the largest end market and the principal determinant of near-term earnings power. In Q1, IT datacom revenue rose 99% reported and 81% organically, with management saying essentially all sequential organic growth came from AI-related products.

For Q2, management guided IT datacom revenue to rise by a low-teens percentage sequentially. That is the most important operational target in the quarter.

What investors should watch:

The setup is complicated by a late-July risk-off move in AI-related equities. APH closed July 28 at $143.88, down roughly 18% from its June 30 closing high of $176.32, though still about 3% above its January 2 close. That pullback can lower the valuation hurdle, but it also means investors are likely scrutinizing any evidence that AI capex demand is cooling.

2. CommScope execution needs to translate from promise to evidence

The January acquisition of CommScope’s Connectivity and Cable Solutions business transformed Amphenol’s communications portfolio. The business contributed $871.5M of Q1 revenue after closing on January 9, and management has said it expects approximately $4.1B of 2026 sales and $0.15 of annual EPS accretion.

The acquisition adds fiber-optic interconnect and cable exposure in data centers and communications networks, alongside building-connectivity products. It also expands Amphenol’s position from connections within racks into rack-to-rack and broader data-center connectivity.

Q2 will be the first cleaner quarter for assessing the asset because it contains a full quarter of ownership and should carry much lower purchase-accounting friction than Q1.

Key questions:

Margin quality: likely more important than the headline beat

Q1 adjusted operating margin was an exceptional 27.3%, up 380 basis points year over year despite CommScope being dilutive to the corporate average. Segment margins were also strong:

The Q2 question is whether the combination of higher AI-related volumes, incremental CommScope revenue, pricing/productivity, and mix can preserve that margin level—or even expand it.

A modest sequential margin decline would not necessarily be concerning if driven by the acquired business mix or normal operational timing. But a more meaningful decline would matter, because the investment case increasingly assumes Amphenol can combine elevated growth with unusually high conversion to profit and cash flow.

Bookings and book-to-bill: the cleanest demand indicator

Q1 orders were $9.44B, producing a record 1.24x book-to-bill. Importantly, management said every end market had a positive book-to-bill, with particularly strong bookings in IT datacom, defense, commercial aerospace, and industrial.

For Q2, the headline revenue result is backward-looking; bookings and book-to-bill will provide the sharper read on demand into the second half.

Management previously noted that some customers have widened order commitments in conjunction with Amphenol’s capacity investments. Investors should distinguish between genuine end-demand strength and timing-related order behavior.

End markets beyond AI: broad strength is an underappreciated support

While AI dominates the narrative, Amphenol’s Q1 performance was notably broad-based.

Defense and industrial are especially relevant

Defense organic growth was 25% in Q1, and management expected a high-single-digit sequential increase in Q2. The company sees structural support from global defense spending and from demand for next-generation electronics, munitions, missile defense, RF interconnect, and related systems.

Industrial growth was also broad, with Q1 organic growth of 16% and management guiding high-single-digit sequential growth in Q2. This strength spanned instrumentation, electrification, oil and gas, medical, heavy equipment, lighting, factory automation, and other harsh-environment applications.

These markets reduce the risk that APH is simply an AI-beta trade. A continued broad-based order profile would be constructive for the quality and durability of growth.

Cash flow, leverage, and capital allocation

The CommScope purchase materially changed the balance-sheet discussion. At March 31, Amphenol had:

The acquisition was expensive at approximately $10.6B net of cash acquired, but Amphenol began from a strong financial position and demonstrated solid Q1 cash generation: $1.12B of operating cash flow and $831M of free cash flow.

For Q2, investors should look for:

  1. Free-cash-flow conversion relative to adjusted earnings.
  2. Working-capital performance as revenue scales.
  3. Early signs of debt reduction or clarity on the deleveraging trajectory.
  4. The balance among capex for AI capacity, dividends, buybacks, and future M&A.

The company returned nearly $485M to shareholders in Q1 through dividends and repurchases. With leverage now higher, the relative priority of deleveraging versus repurchases is worth monitoring.

The tax-rate reset is now embedded

Q1 GAAP earnings were distorted by China-related tax items, including a $130M accrual for unfavorable tax determinations and $160M of additional tax obligations from reassessing prior-year assumptions. More importantly for forward earnings, Amphenol raised its adjusted effective tax rate to 27% and expected that rate to continue for the remainder of 2026.

Thus, Q2 should be cleaner from a GAAP-versus-adjusted perspective, but investors should not expect a return to the lower adjusted tax rates seen previously. The focus should be on operational EPS delivery, rather than a tax-driven beat.

APH is set up as a high-expectations execution report. The company’s own Q2 guidance is already robust, so merely meeting it may not be enough for a decisive positive reaction. The most important ingredients for a favorable outcome are:

  1. IT datacom growth at or above the low-teens sequential guide;
  2. Book-to-bill remaining convincingly above 1.0x;
  3. Evidence that CommScope is outperforming initial growth expectations and moving toward higher margins;
  4. Sustained adjusted operating margin near the 27% level; and
  5. A Q3 outlook that confirms AI strength is not limited to one exceptional quarter.

Conversely, a revenue/EPS beat paired with weaker bookings or cautious AI commentary could be insufficient, particularly given the market’s renewed sensitivity to the durability of AI infrastructure spending.
