The setup: another record is already the stated bar

The key point going into Q2 is unusually clear: management explicitly guided to sequential records in both retail units sold and Adjusted EBITDA. That sets hard minimum hurdles versus Q1:

A strong result would demonstrate that Carvana’s customer proposition, advertising investment, inventory availability, and operational network continue to support growth well above the broader used-vehicle market. CVNA closed at $66.09 on July 28, down about 16.7% from its April 29 close following Q1 earnings and down about 2.6% from July 1. That suggests the stock is not entering the report at an obvious short-term high, but it remains a company where expectations for growth and execution are demanding.

The bullish case requires a result showing that unit growth remains exceptional, reconditioning recovery is translating into better sequential economics, and investment spending is producing durable scale advantages rather than masking margin pressure.

The bear case is not necessarily a modest year-over-year GPU decline, which management has already telegraphed. It is a result in which record volume comes with unexpectedly weak GPU, renewed reconditioning friction, rising variable costs, or less confidence in the full-year growth and long-term margin algorithm.
