Bought on BaT: Four Classic BMW & Mercedes-Benz Pillarless Coupes There's something special about a hardtop coupe, the simple absence of a middle pillar somehow greatly enhancing the feeling of light and space for occupants, while also creating a smooth, uninterrupted roofline for those on the outside to enjoy. With the 8 Series, BMW perfected the pillarless arrangement thanks to an early example of computer-aided design allied to hours of wind-tunnel testing. The result was a four-seat coupé that was effortlessly refined with the windows raised, that also looked supremely stylish when they were lowered.

1972 BMW 3.0 CSa Coupe This is a very attractive unrestored E9 CS sunroof coupe. It has previous celebrity ownership history (Sean Penn and Robin Wright Penn) and has been well-maintained by its enthusiastic owner. It is in a great color combination and the pillarless coupe, sunroof, and automatic transmission make it a great cruiser.

Now, we have the sleek E-Class and S-Class coupes to remind us of a bodystyle that once roamed free, and in big numbers. Will it ever return on this side of the Atlantic?

Pillarless coupes bring something special to the table. For some reason, the design can take a basic car and make it look downright elegant. The BMW 2000 CA was the predecessor to many great BMW coupes, and I think its pillarless design can be credited with BMW's success down the line.
