In general you cannot sleep without a bedroll or a bed, but there are exceptions - you can sleep in a vehicle, a snow shelter, and some locations where something will show up as a "bed" but does not look like a conventional bed. Otherwise your warmth meter will drop and possibly deplete completely, causing you to start losing condition while you sleep.
