The mythical M7 does exist, however, just under a different name. BMW tuner Alpina offers a top. Alpina left racing at the end of the 1977 season to begin its road-car operations with mightier 3-, 5-, and 6-series models (again, effectively presaging BMW's own M3, M5, and M6) just as BMW.

Next year's BMW 7 Series facelift will mark the return of the ALPINA version with a twin-turbo, 4.4. Alpina's M5 version of the N63B44T3 for the B7 makes 600 horsepower from 5,500 to 6,500 rpm, and 590 pound-feet from 2,500 to 5,000.

BMW M Division head of Engineering Albert Biermann says that an M7 should be designed on its latest 7 Series vehicles, according to Auto-Types. Although Biermann is keen on this model, BMW's M Division has never formally worked on such a vehicle. Alpina however is currently developing the B7, which is powered by a twin turbocharged engine generating 533 bhp, but Biermann says that an M7.

You wait a couple of decades for one BMW M7 to come along, and life brings you two. BMW doesn't make a proper M7 version of the 7 Series, but this stylish and powerful Alpina B7 is the next best thing.
