This phenomenon is not random; it is a predictable physical reaction based on the specific composition of the fibers used in the clothing. The Science Behind Shrinkage
To prevent shrinkage, it is helpful to understand the cause. Natural fibers, such as cotton and wool, possess a helical structure that behaves similarly to a spring. When heat is applied, the fibers relax and release the tension of the twist, allowing the material to contract. Furthermore, the mechanical agitation of the dryer tumbles the fibers against one another, physically squeezing them closer together. This combination of heat and movement is what transforms loose weaves into tight, compact fabrics, effectively reducing the overall size of the item.
Natural Fibers Most Prone to Shrinking
Natural materials are generally the most susceptible to shrinking because they absorb moisture readily, which causes the fibers to swell and contract. If you are trying to maintain the original dimensions of your clothing, these specific textiles require the most attention.

Cotton
For many people, cotton is the primary culprit of laundry mishaps. This fiber is widely used because it is soft and breathable, but it is also highly reactive to heat. Shirts, jeans, and towels made from 100% cotton will typically shrink significantly if dried on high heat. To minimize this, washing in cold water and line drying is the safest approach, though tumble drying on low heat is often acceptable for casual items like basic t-shirts.
Wool
Wool is arguably the most delicate natural fiber regarding heat. Because it is crimped and elastic, it reacts strongly to agitation and hot water. When wool is thrown into a dryer, the combination of heat and tumbling causes the scales on the hair fibers to lock together in what is commonly called "felting." - Spandex/Lycra: While this fiber provides excellent stretch, it can be sensitive to prolonged heat. Tumble drying on low is usually safe, but exposing it to high heat for extended periods can break down the elastic fibers, causing the garment to lose its recovery shape.

Most modern clothing is not made from 100% natural or 100% synthetic fibers; instead, they are blends designed to offer the best of both worlds. However, these mixtures often inherit the weaknesses of their natural components.
A standard cotton-polyester blend, for example, will likely shrink in the dryer, but not to the same extent as pure cotton. The polyester content helps to "lock" the cotton fibers in place, reducing the degree of shrinkage. When checking care labels, look for fabrics with less than 5% spandex or elastane if you plan to machine dry them, as the synthetic component provides the necessary structure to resist the contracting forces of the heat.

Reshaping Shrunken Items
