Forget one of one: this particular BMW 3.0 CSL is, quite literally, the very first M race car, and it's up for sale for presumably many dollars. BMW had returned to six-cylinder power for its range-topping models in 1968 with the launch of the 2500 and 2800 saloons. Also new was the 3.0 CSL's forerunner, the 2800CS coupé, though the latter's running gear had more in common with the existing, four-cylinder 2000C/CS.

That car is now an icon: the BMW 3.0 CSL, aka the Batmobile because of its wild body kit that included an ultra-low front air dam, strakes on the hood, and a gigantic rear wing. The year 1973 marked a significant milestone for BMW in motorsport, as the German automaker not only powered Jean-Pierre Jarier to victory in the European Formula 2 Championship but also captured the European Touring Car Championship with the now-iconic 3.0 CSL, affectionately dubbed the Batmobile. To challenge the hitherto dominant Ford Capri RS, BMW Motorsport created the 3.0 CSL homologation special which, mid-way through the '73 campaign, sprouted the infamous 'Batmobile' aero kit that transformed the elegant E9.

An outstanding recreation of the highest calibre, this BMW 3.0 CSL is the product of a four-year build by globally renowned marque experts, Laranca Engineering and is offered in virtually new, race. Built along three distinct series between late 1972 and 1975, BMW's 3.0 CSL (the "L" suffix signified "leicht" or "lightweight") "Batmobile" was truly a homologated racing car for the road. Just 1,265 examples were factory-produced, of which 765 were left.
