From the Factory BMW implemented an 8 digit code to I.D. variose engine blocks. For the m20 engines this code is located on the intake side under the cover for the oil pump driveshaft.
Here is a shot of the code on my 86 325es block My code is 24376031 The First number stands for the assembly line 0 or 1=M10, M42 2 or 3=M20, M21, M50 4 or 5=M30. The 1 st block contains 4 digits with information on the assembly line and serial number of engines produced daily. The 2nd block shows the factory code and day of production.
