BMW Group is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall (effective March 2, 2017) involving the front driveshaft in certain Model Year 2011 - 2014 BMW X5, X6, and X6 ActiveHybrid SAV models. It seems that BMW had a common problem with this driveshaft as I understand I have the same one in the F15 as the E70 - Front Driveshaft Universal Joint (s) Recall for X5, X6 Has anyone else experience the u-joint failure on there F15/F16? I'm having a hard time finding any posts on our model. I should have mentioned this note: it is apparent to me why they have issues with the 2009 and up driveline, it is much lighter around the u joints.

There was a recall issued for front propshaft on E70 & E71 back in 2011. Some have failed after being checked by BMW and found OK. Issue is caused by corrosion on the coupling resulting in a partial seizure and failure.
If I remember correctly it was the positioning of a drain above the UJ that was the root cause. If it goes at speed. This BMW X5 recall affects 145,000 X5 and X6 SUV's in the US and Canada, which have been recalled due to front driveshaft failure.

The car has 52000 miles and serviced in line with the BMW service guidelines by a BMW main dealer.
The Prop- shaft on the BMW X5 has been subject to recall for the E70 models but still seems to be an issue on the later F15 model. When this part fails it often takes with it the gearbox or engine, amongst other parts.
