The reason I am writing this article is because I ran into a new issue last week with our S50 swap into our 1996 E36 touring project. Before this week, I thought EWS was only on OBD2 cars (1996.5+), but our engine was a S50, and our car is the early 1996 version, making it OBD1. Even though this relates to an E36, I'm posting it here because it has the same M50 engine and electrical system as the E34.
This is the story of a BMW lover's journey through diagnosing and fixing a no-start situation. First of all, I want to express a sincere thanks to a fellow forum member. I need some help, I have a 95ti that I just did a M44 engine conversion in and I want to bypass or disable the EWS to get it running.
I rather not have to drag it to the dealer to get the EWS "aligned" until after I get it going and work the bugs out. Thanks for any help. Bimmerforums is the preferred online BMW Forum and community for BMW owners.
At Bimmerforums, you will find technical how. Hello All! The other day I went to start my 1997 328i Auto E36 BMW and I got nothing. No crank, no start.
After reading the codes, I realized the EWS2 and the DME were not communicating properly. They send rolling codes to make sure the key transponder correlates to the DME. The key, DME, and EWS2, are all linked.
Aft. EWS-II, E36 1/95-8/96 = similar to the above but with an electronic key, EWS module (brain), and the DME all linked together. The same door lock logic remains.
Works with any OBD2 E36 (96 or later). I'm not familiar with how EWS. It's BMW's anti-theft system that prevents the engine from starting without a matched key, immobilizer module, and ECU.
Which vehicles have EWS? EWS is found in many BMWs and MINIs from the mid-90s through the early 2000s, including: BMW E36, E38, E39, E46, E53, E60, E85 MINI R50, R52, R53 What issues can EWS cause? EWS on the E36 chassis What is EWS? EWS is " Elektronische Wegfahr Sperre". Don't speak German? Then that probably wasn't helpful.
EWS is BMW's electronic drive away protection system. The exact implementation of EWS on the E36 varied slightly through the years, but the general lack of long term reliability stayed the same.
