Entrepreneurial Spirit: Kid Businesses That Make Money
The world of entrepreneurship is not limited to adults. Many kids have successfully started and run their own businesses, teaching them valuable skills like financial management, marketing, and time management. If you're looking for ways to encourage your child to develop these skills or want to know what kids are doing to make money, look no further. Here are some kid businesses that are making waves and earning a profit.
Crafting and Selling Products
Kids with a creative streak can start a business by crafting and selling handmade products. From knitted scarves to baked goods, the possibilities are endless. Many kids sell their products online through platforms like Etsy or eBay, while others sell at local markets or to friends and family. With the rise of social media, kids can now showcase their products and reach a wider audience.
One example of a kid business that has taken off is a 12-year-old girl who started selling handmade jewelry on Etsy. She sources materials from her local craft store and creates unique pieces that sell for up to $50 each. With over 1,000 sales, she has earned a tidy profit and learned valuable skills in marketing and product development.
Servicing and Delivering
Not Just Lemonade: Other Kid Businesses That Make Money
While lemonade stands are a classic kid business, there are many other options to consider. Kids can offer services like dog walking, lawn care, or house sitting, and even start a delivery business. With the rise of the gig economy, kids can now sign up to be delivery drivers for companies like Uber Eats or DoorDash.
- Yard work and lawn care: Mow lawns, rake leaves, or shovel snow for neighbors and family friends.
- Delivery services: Sign up to be a delivery driver for companies like Uber Eats or DoorDash.
- House sitting: Offer to watch over homes for neighbors and family friends while they're away.
- Dog walking: Take dogs for walks or offer to pet sit for neighbors and family friends.
Online Businesses
With the rise of the internet, kids can start online businesses with minimal upfront costs. They can create websites or social media accounts to sell products or services, and even offer consulting services. One example is a 15-year-old boy who started a YouTube channel focused on video game reviews and walkthroughs. He earns money through ad revenue and sponsorships.
Another example is a 10-year-old girl who started a blog focused on kids' crafts and activities. She earns money through affiliate marketing and sponsored content.
Recycling and Reselling
Kids can also make money by collecting and recycling cans and bottles, or reselling items they find at garage sales or thrift stores. This teaches them valuable skills in sustainability and entrepreneurship. One example is a 12-year-old boy who collects cans and bottles and recycles them to earn money for his school's robotics team.
Another example is a 9-year-old girl who resells gently used clothing and toys on consignment. She earns a profit and teaches her friends about the importance of reusing and recycling.
Lessons Learned
While starting a business can be a fun and rewarding experience for kids, it's essential to teach them the importance of financial responsibility and time management. Encourage your child to create a budget, track their expenses, and set aside money for taxes and savings.
Additionally, teach your child the value of hard work and perseverance. Running a business can be challenging, and kids will encounter setbacks and failures along the way. Encourage them to learn from their mistakes and keep moving forward.
