Bmw 635 Group C

Australian Group C 1981 The team was born out of Allan Grice 's Craven Mild Racing which had run Holden Torana 's and Holden Commodore 's in the mid to late 1970s and into 1980. In 1981 CMR became the factory operation for BMW Australia running a Group C version of the 3.5 litre, 6cyl, BMW 635 CSi.

They returned with a Group 2 European Touring Car Championship BMW 635 CSi, apparently a former press fleet car as prepared for competition by Werginz Motorsport in Austria. The E24 6 Series in road car form had its origins in 1976 and ran through to 1989.

Joining that grid will be the Group C JPS BMW 635 Coupe that touring car legend and Phillip Island Classic event patron Jim Richards will be piloting over the weekend. The car, built by Frank Gardner's JPS team in 1982 and now owned by New Zealand enthusiast Peter Sturgeon, is an old friend to Richards.

This power boost, as well as more aero and tyre, took the car's performance on some way, with Australian Touring Car ace Jim Richards taking the 635CSi Group C to 5 th, 3 rd and 2 nd in various Australian enduros throughout 1983 and 1984. In 1985, however, the car would be overhauled ready for the world.

The absence of a single outright victory during the JPS BMW 635's four years of competition from 1981 to 1984 was more a reflection of the car's unsuitability to Australia's unique Group C touring car rules than any lack of expertise or commitment by the team.
