Furthermore, standard plywood is not waterproof and will fail if exposed to constant moisture, leading to delamination and mold growth. Therefore, the primary goals when tiling over plywood are to isolate the tile from substrate movement, provide a waterproof barrier, and create a surface that is perfectly level.

All screws or nails must be counter-sunk and the heads filled with a suitable patching compound. Any high spots, dents, or imperfections must be flattened, as these irregularities will telegraph through the thinset mortar and cause the grout joints to be uneven. A clean, dry, and smooth surface is essential for the thinset to bond correctly to the substrate.

With the moisture barrier in place, you can proceed with the actual tile installation. Start by establishing a grid with chalk lines to ensure the layout is centered and aesthetically pleasing. Use a notched trowel to apply polymer-modified thinset mortar to the surface, ensuring full contact between the tile and the membrane below. Because the membrane absorbs less moisture than concrete, you often do not need to fully saturate it with thinset, but you must ensure complete coverage to prevent hollow spots. As you grout the joints, make sure to use a high-quality, flexible sanded grout, which is necessary to accommodate minor shifts between the tiles.

After the grout has cured, a penetrating sealer is highly recommended, especially in shower floors or applications where heavy water exposure is expected.
