XGS-PON installation experiences Hi all, Hoping someone can offer some information on their experience with XGS. It depends if it's a cabinet installed by Nextfibre or by Virgin Media in an HFC area. If it's the latter, migration to XGS-PON won't be completed until about 2040.

Hi @Suttonacloud I'm in an XGS-PON area, slightly different than you, they dug up the causeway, buried the cables & grey cabinets all over the place, started the infrastructure at the end of May'23 finished in July, then Virgin Media vans appeared connecting the cabinets, went Live & started to taking orders on 1/10/23, no point in ringing customer services, they don't know anything. At present Virgin Media's fastest package available to HFC/RFoG customers is their GIG 1 which has a 1130mbps down and 104mbps upload. Customers on the newer Nexfibre XGS-PON (more on that later) can now get Virgin's new Gig2 (2Gbps download) package and Symmetric speeds.

From some brief research I see that the new cabinet is likely to be for xgs. I have previously written a guide on comparing the Virgin Media Hub 5x vs 5 vs 4 vs 3 and this highlighted that the new Hub 5x uses fibre to premises XGS-PON in comparison to the DOCSIS 3.1 technology that's predominantly used on the Virgin Media network. Virgin are trialling the new Virgin XGS-PON technology, and this is planned to be fully rolled out, replacing DOCSIS 3.1 by 2028 at a cost.

The document outlines the assembly and wiring instructions for the XGS-PON POP-A type street cabinet, intended for Virgin Media O2's fixed access networks. It includes details on equipment layout, power distribution, and the recommended order of assembly for optimal performance. The target audience consists of various engineering and planning teams involved in cabinet builds and network.

Welcome to part 3 of my journey to getting Virgin Media's (nexfibre) XGS PON FTTP. In part 1 I talked about the pre sales process and then in part 2 covered the pre install. In this blog I will cover the install of the service and initial testing.

Nexfibre are currently/have finished laying fibre in my street. I was wondering what the timeline typically is from when roadworks have been completed to go live on VM website. Currently my area does not have fibre, although closely neighbouring areas have VM & XGS-PON setup, at all so this is the first fibre installation for the street.
