If you have a look at the Top Gear lap times the Z4M is quicker than almost everything in a comparable price bracket only the new M3 and Evo FQ 400, Evora and a couple of TVRs have posted better times. Everthing faster is either a track biased car or an exotic from the GT.
When you think of bmw M cars you immediately think of 3,5,6 and now 2,4,8 etc. It was probably a car that was overlooked because it was away from the norm. Also with it being a 2 seater and not having the practicality of an M car in this case the E46 M3 I think that's why its not really thought of in the same way.
When I went to the dealership and both E92 and Z4M were on the floor, I chose to test drive the Z4M and cemented my choice. I've driven all iterations of E92 M3 as well!

The Z4M is faster and lighter, but also less practical in terms of cargo and passenger space, and the ride is harsher. I'm of the opinion that BMW dropped the ball with th Z4M somewhat.
