TheAutochrome process, patented by Louis Lumière in 1907, was the first commercial color photography method. It used glass plates coated with potato starch grains dyed red, green, and blue.
When exposed to light, each color grain darkened in proportion to the intensity of light reflected onto it. Developing the plate revealed separator layers, producing a full-color image. Although cumbersome and expensive, Autochrome offered an enchanting glimpse into a world beyond monochrome.
Safety Film & The Rise of Mass Photography
As photography entered the 20th century, two trends dominated: the increasing popularity of color and the shift from glass to film. Safety film, an early 1900s innovation, replaced explosive nitro-cellulose with less volatile bases. This made it safer and more convenient to use, fuelling the rise of mass photography.
Continuous improvements in film technology, coupled with advancements in printing techniques like the Cibachrome process, allowed for vibrant, lasting color prints.
