Applies to all commercial wireless devices, services, and technologies, including voice and data capabilities, that operate either as part of the DoD GIG, or as part of DoD non-GIG Information Technology (IT) (stand-alone) systems.
Wireless communication technology means devices connect with each other into a network and data or information between these devices transferred without wires or cables. The goal of this document is to help organizations understand how PCI DSS applies to wireless environments, how to limit the PCI DSS scope as it pertains to wireless, and provide practical methods and concepts for deployment of secure wireless in payment card transaction environments. With minimal infrastructure requirements, wireless data transmission enables rapid deployment, allowing businesses and organizations to establish connectivity in a shorter timeframe. The 802.11 standards define "frame" types for use in transmission of data as well as management and control of wireless links. At the top level these frames are divided into three functions: Management Frames, Control Frames and Data Frames.
