While an interior sump pit is often the visible component, the most effective strategy begins outside the foundation. Exterior drainage, often referred to as "waterproofing," aims to prevent water from ever reaching the basement wall. This is typically achieved by installing a perimeter drain, which is a trench dug around the perimeter of the foundation footer. Gravel is placed in this trench, and a perforated pipe is laid at the bottom, pitched slightly towards the daylight or towards the sump pit. The installation of a perimeter drain is a major excavation project, but it is the single most effective step for protecting a basement. The trench is then filled with washed gravel, which allows water to flow freely into the perforated pipe while preventing soil clogging. A durable filter fabric is wrapped around the gravel to prevent silt from entering the system and causing a future blockage.

When exterior water is not discharged to a lower grade, the interior sump pit becomes the last line of defense. This pit is a lined excavation in the lowest part of the basement or crawlspace, designed to collect water that seeps through the floor or walls. A submersible pump, placed directly inside the pit, is often preferred for residential use due to its quiet operation and ability to handle small debris. If run underground to a daylight exit, the line must be laid below the frost line or contain a check valve to prevent freezing.
