Solving these issues requires a systematic approach that addresses the flow of water on your land. The goal is not just to move water away from one spot, but to manage the entire topography to create a healthy and stable environment.

Diagnosing the Drainage Issue

Before grabbing a shovel, you must understand the specific forces working against your yard. Water follows the path of least resistance, and usually down gravity. The key is to identify where the water is coming from and where it is going. Look at the problem during and after a rain event to see how the water travels across the grass.

There are generally two types of surface issues. The first is low-lying areas where water pools because there is no slope to carry it away. The second is hardscapes like patios or driveways that are pitched incorrectly, directing water toward your house or a vulnerable garden bed. For severe runoff or specific problem areas, hardscape solutions provide a definitive barrier. A solid path, patio, or driveway prevents water from soaking into the ground in high-traffic areas. However, the material you choose matters greatly for drainage.

Opt for permeable pavers or gravel instead of solid concrete. These materials allow rainwater to pass through the surface and into the soil below.
