While it often appears as a simple case of overwatering, the reality is far more complex, with causes ranging from underground infrastructure leaks to natural soil phenomena. Understanding the specific reason for this moisture is the critical first step in restoring a healthy and visually appealing landscape.

Common Culprits: Sprinkler and Irrigation Issues

The most frequent cause of wet spots is a malfunction within the landscape irrigation system. A misaligned sprinkler head can drift or crack, spraying water horizontally across the grass instead of into the planting bed. Similarly, a clogged nozzle can create an uneven distribution, leading to a concentrated pool of water in one specific location. Leaks in the supply lines, whether from a damaged PVC pipe or a loose connection at a valve or head, can create a persistent damp area that grows larger over time, often without any visible sign of a break above ground.

The Hidden Leak: Plumbing and Drainage Woes

When the irrigation system appears to be in good working order, the problem may lie beneath the surface. A leak in the main water line running from the street to the house can create a constant source of moisture that pools in the lowest part of the yard. Similarly, a clogged or damaged underground drain line, such as one serving a bathtub, shower, or washing machine, can force water to seep out through the nearest low point in the soil. These subsurface leaks are particularly insidious because they can persist for weeks or months, wasting significant amounts of water and increasing utility bills.

Natural and Environmental Factors

This process can generate heat and, in some cases, produce methane or other gases.
